The idea for writing this book began years ago when I was doing park accessibility assessments for Santa Clara County Parks. I would write down what the Federal standards would be for things like the width of a restroom door frame, the height of a restroom sink, how much space is needed next to a park bench, etc. As I continued to do more assessments, my notebook began to fill up with many of the ADA and ABA guidelines and standards. It was then when I envision of having a book that was written explicitly for parks and accessible trails. It would be a practical guide for park management and anyone interested in knowing what standards should be used in a parking area, restrooms, accessible trails, and so on.
